Remarks 'eel' from Middle English, 'ele', from Old English 'ael' and akin to Old High German, 'ãl' (Ref. 11978); 'snake' like 'serpent' and 'snail' is etymologically the 'crawling' animal, from a prehistoric German base denoting 'crawl' (p. 485 in Ref. 11979).
