Remarks 'Merlu' from Old French 'merle' from Low Latin 'merulus' and Classical Latin 'merula', also from Provençal 'merlus' which is a cross of Old French 'merle' and 'lus' (from Latin 'lucius', i.e., pike) (p. 459 in Ref, 9404); 'du Cape', i.e., of the Cape; 'cap' from Provençal, i.e., head, used to designate promontories along the Mediterranean Sea (p. 131 in Ref. 9404). Name not listed in ASFIS version 2006 (Ref. 56807).
