Remarks 'Redside', i.e., with red flanks, alluding to the broad stripe of orange to crimson from the operculum to the anal below the dark lateral band of breeding male specimens of this species (Ref. 1998); 'shiner', i.e., a silvery fish (p. 1086 in Ref. 11978) alluding to the overall silvery coloration of this fish (on sides and ventral portions, Ref. 1998), from prehistoric 'skinan' (p. 474 in Ref. 11979).
