Remarks Currently used, replaced 'Pacific dogfish' used in Ref. 4925; ''spiny', from 'spine' from Old French 'espine' from Latin 'spina', i.e., thorn probably derived from the same source as 'spica', i.e., ear of corn (p. 494 in Ref. 11979); 'dogfish', i.e., fish that ressembles a dog; 'dog', from Latin 'canis' of unknown origin (p. 179 in Ref. 11979); 'fish', from Germanic 'fiskaz' from the same source as Latin 'piscis', from Indo-European 'piskos' (p. 229 in Ref. 11979). Applied to Squalus acanthias.
