Comments: Type locality of holotype of Varicorhinus axelrodi: 'rivière Loukoula, lieudit "Porte du Mayombe", 9 km en aval de Mpounga, Congo Brazzaville (4°20'S-12°26'E)' (Ref. 53571). Known from tributaries of the lower and central Kouilou River (Ref. 53571, 81639). Map in Ref. 81639 also shows presence in the Loémé River, but this is not confirmed in the text.

পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ): 14-15; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 8. Diagnosis: mouth more or less straight or only slightly curved; barbels absent or present as vestigial nubs; last unbranched dorsal fin ray weakly ossified and flexible; 26-28 scales in lateral line (Ref. 53571, 81639). Pelvic fin insertion below middle of dorsal fin (Ref. 81639).
