Comments: Known throughout the upper Uele River drainage and from the upper and middle Aruwimi River drainage (middle Congo River basin)(Ref. 26634). Also reported from the Itimbiri (Ref. 106290). This species replaces M. nanum in the non-forested regions of the north-eastern Congo basin (Ref. 26634). Type locality of the holotype of M. uelense: "Zaire: Uele district: just outside borders of Garamba National Park, in the northeastern most headwaters of the Zaire River system, unspecified tributary waters of the Nangbalama River, a tributary of the Aka River, which feeds the Dungu River, a major tributary of the Uele River" (Ref. 26634).

Africa: Uele River drainage, upper and middle Aruwimi River drainage (Ref. 26634) and the Itimbiri (Ref. 106290) (middle Congo River basin) in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Also recorded from the Yei River, a tributary to the White Nile in Sudan; this species replaces M. nanum in the non-forested regions of the north-eastern Congo basin (Ref. 26634).
