Comments: Known from the Kasai system, middle Congo (rivers Ruki, Lobilo, Tsalowe, Ley Yolé, Lubilu, Isalowe and Lilanla), Ubangi system (Ref. 44050), rivers Tshuapa (Ref. 44050) and Yenge-Salonga confluence (Ref. 93897) (Ruki drainage), Aruwimi, Itimbiri (Ref. 106290), Lomami, Wagenia Falls, Lualaba (including the Maiko-Loboya) (Ref. 106245) and upper Lualaba (Kilwezi River) (Ref. 44050). Type locality: Ruki R. at Eala, 00°04'N, 18°20'E, Congo R. basin, Congo (Ref. 44050). Also Ref. 78218.

Etymology: Malapterurus: Greek, mala = a lot of + Greek, pteron = fin + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335);  melanochir: From the Greek "melas" = dark and "cheir" = hand, in reference to the dusky pectoral fin characteristic for the species (Ref. 44050).

गुदा कांटा 0; ऐनल सौफट रेज़: 9 - 11; जानवरों की रीड़ का जोड़: 42 - 45. Diagnosis: tooth patches broad; obliquely angled pectoral fins positioned low on body; 43-45 vertebrae; 9-11 anal-fin rays; eyes round; body relatively darkly pigmented; larger specimens with dusky pectoral and pelvic fin rays (Ref. 44050).
