Family:  Argentinidae (Argentines or herring smelts)
Max. size:  20 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: southern Spain to Cape Blanc in Mauritania including western Mediterranean.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Found on the outer continental shelf and upper slope, probably near the bottom. Feeds on pelagic crustaceans. Spawns from winter to spring in the Mediterranean (Ref. 4773).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 11 July 2012 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
