Family:  Distichodontidae (Distichodus)
Max. size:  38 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: widespread in the Congo River basin, from the lower Congo (Ref. 42510) to the upper Lualaba (Ref. 2970); absent from the Luapula-Moero (Ref. 2970).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 25-26; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 13-14. Snout distinctively elongated; mouth terminal; 6-8 vertical dark bars on the flanks that are persistent throughout life-span: in life, orange to reddish body colour (Ref. 122092).
