Family:  Syngnathidae (Pipefishes and seahorses), subfamily: Syngnathinae
Max. size:  22.1 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine; depth range 0 - 5 m, amphidromous?
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: southern Biscay to Gibraltar, and also the Mediterranean and Black seas. Introduced and became established in the former USSR.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Euryhaline, found among detritus or vegetation over sand or mud, within a temperature range of 8° to 24°C. Probably an amphidromous species (Ref. 51243) but migratory behavior needs verification. Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Early free-living young measure 23 mm TL (Ref. 6733).

Country info:  Known from the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and its watersheds, Mediterranean Sea, European Black Sea watersheds, European Mediterranean Sea watersheds, Anatolian Mediterranean Sea watersheds, Anatolian Black Sea watersheds and Asi Nehri/Orontes watershed (Ref. 58342). Also Ref. 106151. Found in central coast of Black Sea (Sinop and Samsun vicinity) (Ref. 88083). Listed on Appendix III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna). Threatened by habitat loss and eutrophication/pollution (Ref. 58342). Also Ref. 683, 57855. Status of threat: Data deficient (Ref. 58342). EurTurk
