Abstract. Presence of Mugil rubrioculus in Cuba and the taxonomic situation of Mugil longicauda (Pisces, Mugilidae).
The presence of Mugil rubrioculus Harrison, Nirchio, Oliveiras, Ron et Gaviria, 2007 is reported for Cuban waters, on basis of 96 specimens collected at Nipe Bay
and adjacent areas. The occurrence of 'lebranchito' Mugil hospes Jordan et Culver, 1895 in Cuba is confirmed, and the taxonomic situation of Mugil longicauda Guitart et Alvarez-Lajonchere, 1976 is clarified and its diagnostic characters are discussed and compared with those of Mugil curvidens Valenciennes, 1836 and other mullet species present in Cuba. Additionally, a key for
the identification of the mullet species from Cuban waters is provided. |
