At 8.5-9.0 mm, head is ovate and small to moderate; snout is pointed; the oblique mouth reaches to the anterior edge of the eyes; eyes are of moderate size and obliquely elongate. Gut is straight and reaches 60% of BL. Caudal fin has incipient rays. Has dorsal double row of melanophores, ventral series of large melnophores, and thin mediolateral line. At 10.0 m, body deepens and becomes more cylindrical. All fin rays are present except those of the pectoral fin but remnant of the finfold can be observed ventrally. Dorsal and ventral fins are positioned at mid-body oppositely from each other. A large band of melanophores persists ventrally behind the head. At 15.0 mm, the mouth is terminal, eyes became round, and all fins are complete. The lateral band of melanophores is enlarged, dorsal surface of the entire body is dark and a characteristic band of melanophores bisects the eye and extend onto the snout. At 40.0 mm, juveniles look like adults.
