Present in the continental shelf waters off the northeastern United States (Ref. 37512). Based on visual census approaches, this species occur primarily in boulder reef (i.e., piled boulders with deep interstices) habitats, also in gravel with scattered boulders in the western Gulf of Maine; late juveniles (11-20 cm TL) occurred as well as in dense cerianthid (Cerianthus borealis) patches, but not on unstructured mud habitat (without cerianthid anemones) in Stellwagen Bank (Ref. 58487).
