Remarks 'whitebait', from 'white', from Indo-European '*kwitnos' or '*kwidnos', formed from same base as Sanskrit 'sveta', i.e., white and Russian 'svet', i.e., light (p. 573, Ref. 11979); and 'bait', i.e., cause to bite, from Old Norse 'beita', i.e., 'fish bait' (p. 47, Ref. 19979).
