Comments: Found in temporary pools close to streams of river basins draining into northern baía de Guanabara, including rio Iguaçú and rio Estrela basins. In recent survey encompassing the whole geographic range, this species is critically endangered (Ref. 50094). Possibly extinct in the wild (Ref. 27139). Also Ref. 3881, 36579.

Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 15 - 17; Radios blandos anales: 18 - 21; Vértebra: 28 - 29. Possess an asymmetrical caudal fin, with convex dorsal outline and a straight ventral outline, anteriormost ventral procurrent ray; a white stripe with narrow ventral black border on the ventral edge of the caudal fin of male. Dorsal fin of male approximately triangular, tip pointed ending in 2 short filamentous rays with the tips reaching middle of caudal fin; dorsal fin rounded to slightly pointed in female. Anal fin of male approximately rectangular, posterior tip slightly elongated; rounded in female.

Bottom spawner. Is very difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139). Collected in clear water shallow pools (about 30 cm deep) in forest; no aquatic vegetation (Ref. 50094).
