The ranges of S. aequifasciatus and S. tarzoo are roughly divided by the Purus arch (located between Manaus and Rio Bauana) with only a few S. tarzoo specimens from the Madeira river downstream of the arch, and no S. aequifasciatus specimens from locations upstream of the arch.
