Uses: no uses
Comments: Known from a broad coastal plain area between the Jucuruçu river basin (17° 18'58"S 39°13'36"W) and the Mucuri river basin (18° 05'30"S 39° 32'56"W) in southern Bahia state, eastern Brazil, about 95 km in a straight line. Between 1989 and 1998, populations recorded in Jucuruçu, Itanhém and Meio river basins, as well as some populations previously found around the village of Mucuri close to the Mucuri river mouth, have disappeared. The area of occupancy has been tremendously reduced from approximately 200 km2 to a small area of about 10 km2 in the present day. The threats pose by abrupt and extensive environmental degradation suggest that this species should be classified as endangered (Ref. 96072).

Descrição suscinta Morfologia | Morfometria

Raios dorsais (total): 12-18; Raios anais : 19 - 24; Vértebras: 27 - 29. Xenurolebias pataxo differs from all species of Xenurolebias by the absence of black spots on the posterior part of the caudal peduncle in females (vs. 1-5 spots). It is also distinguished from X. myersi by its narrower head (head width 65.7-71.1% SL in males and 65.8-70.3% in females, vs. 71.5-74.6% and 74.5-81.1%, respectively), lack of round yellow spots on the distal portion of the anal fin in males (vs. presence), longer filaments on the tip of the dorsal fin in males (reaching the posterior portion of the caudal fin, vs. reaching between the base and middle of the caudal fin), and caudal fin lanceolate, with a pronounced posterior tip in larger individuals (vs. sub-lanceolate, never forming a distinctive tip posteriorly). It can be further diagnosed from X. izecksohni by having the dorsal and anal fins, in males, with short light bars on the basal portion and small round light spots of the distal portion (vs. branching bars), absence of oblique short bars on ventral portion of caudal fin in males (vs. presence), and fewer dark brown bars on the caudal fin in males (5-7 vs. 9-12) (Ref. 96072).

Biologia     Glossário (p.ex. epibenthic)

Occurs in a broad coastal plain area which is situated within a touristic zone. As a consequence, the natural habitats have experienced a great decline since the 1980s, with remarkable habitat loss in the last two decades due to intensive urbanization (Ref. 96072).
