Comments: Type locality: Manado (Ref. 48636). Museum: South side of Bunaken I., Manado Bay, northern Sulawesi, NCIP 6132 (holotype of A.batunai, 6.58cm SL). Near the jetty at Pulau Putri, Seribu Is., WAM P.25248-004. Off southwest coast of Karimundajawa I., Java Sea, WAM P.30152-001 (Ref. 31112). Recorded from Raja Ampat Islands, Maumere Bay, Komodo and Manado and vicinity; with an Indonesian distribution from Papua to Java and Sumatra (Ref. 47567).

Adults occur in silty lagoons with large staghorn coral colonies, usually congregating in small groups (Ref. 48636). Seen usually on Acropora branching corals of sheltered lagoons and protected fringing reefs. They are usually encountered alone or in pairs and hovers to about one meter or so above the coral substratum. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Nests on branches of dead corals (Ref. 90102). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Relatively common at all sites where it has been observed (Ref. 48636).
