Africa: widespread occurrence in Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and upper Shire River.

Found in the same habitat as its prey, Oreochromis, but can also be found over open sandy floors and sometimes near rocks or in the open water (Ref. 5595). Diet consists of scales from the caudal fins of shoaling species of Oreochromis (Ref. 267).
