Southwest Pacific: endemic to New Zealand and the Auckland Islands.

Maturity: L_m 24.5, range 24 - 25 cm
Max length : 35.0 cm TL hane/ej könsbestämd; (Ref. 5316)

Occurs in intertidal algal beds, as well as wharves and pilings. Usually at depths less than 7.5 m. Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205). The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Males probably brooding at about 24-25 cm TL.
