Occurs in swamps, pools and swampy parts of brooks and small streams in the humid coastal rainforest. Bottom spawner, 2 months incubation. Is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).

In captivity with not enough hiding places the male can kill females, who aren't ready to spawn (Ref. 1672).
