Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).

Found near the bottom of lakes, ponds and streams of slow-flowing water. Spawning season: January to April.
