Comments: Known from the tributaries of the Mississippi River of SW Illinois and E Missouri, in the Wabash and Ohio River drainages of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia; and the Atlantic drainages of Maryland and Virginia (Ref. 57709). Status of Threat: Threatened species in Tennessee due to surface-mining activities (Ref. 10294).

Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335);  buccata: From the words Eri, an intensifying prefix; cymba, meaning cavity; and buccata, cheek (Ref. 10294).

Biologie     Fachlexikon (Englisch) (z.B. epibenthic)

Inhabit shallow sandy riffles and raceways of creeks and small to medium rivers (Ref. 3814, 10294). Young and adult feed mainly on entomostracans (cladocerans, copepods, and ostracods); with adults also consuming increasing numbers of midge larvae (chironomids) at night. Life span, 3-4 years; sexual maturity reached in the second or late in the first summer of its life. Two spawning peaks, older individuals in the mid-spring spawning and the preceding year's young during the July spawning (Ref. 10294).
