Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 2 - 43 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Line Islands, north to the Izu Islands and southern Japan, south to Rowley Shoals and New Caledonia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-13; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 11-12. Description: Overall color is olivaceous brown; dorsal fin margin black; black spot on tip of both upper and lower lobes of caudal fin; anterior tip of anal fin black (Ref. 2334). Body depth 1.9-2.2 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults occur in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs. Aggregate close to shelter (Ref. 9710). Feed on zooplankton (Ref. 7247). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699).
