Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Plectorhinchinae
Max. size:  90 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 0 - 80 m
Distribution:  Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea and southern Oman to South Africa and Madagascar (Ref. 11441); including Saudi Arabia, Arabian Gulf (Ref. 95411).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 19-20; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-7. Black with white crossbars, fading to grey with 4 white bars; lips, skin around mouth and pectorals pink in color (Ref. 2799).
Biology:  Found on coral reefs (Ref. 9710) as well as in littoral pools (Ref. 5213). Solitary species (Ref. 2799).
