Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Haemulinae
Max. size:  50 cm FL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 10 - 20 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Somalia (Ref. 30573), Mozambique (Ref. 5213) and Madagascar to Natal, South Africa; also from Gulf of Aden to Sri Lanka, including the Red Sea. Also recorded from Indonesia (Ref. 5978).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-7
Biology:  Inhabits coastal waters and frequents sandy areas near rocks. Flesh good but undergoes rapid softening (Ref. 2799). Marketed fresh (Ref. 3412). Depth range based on occurrence; to be replaced with a better reference.
