Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Smiliogastrinae
Max. size:  25 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Asia: India and Sri Lanka.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-11; Anal soft rays: 8-8
Biology:  Occur in rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. Usually found in flowing water, particularly with a pebble substrate (Ref. 6028). Feeds on detritus, algae and higher plants (Ref. 6028). Useful in guinea worm control.
