Known from Zhu Jiang (=Pearl River) delta in Guangdong Province and from drainages in Hainan Island and their river mouths (Ref. 33303) in northern China, southward as far as the Yangtze River (=Changjiang River) and farther, Liao River, Lake Khanka (Ref. 1441) and Lianzi Lake (Ref. 38003) and and Tungting Lake where it is known as "Bai-yü" or "whitefish" (Ref. 35840). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (extensive stocking in all great inland waters) (Ref. 55380).
