Family:  Monacanthidae (Filefishes)
Max. size:  37.4 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 50 - 110 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Northwest Pacific: Hokkaido, Japan to the Ryukyu Islands. Also known from the East and South China seas.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Commercially cultured in Japan. Juveniles associate with drifting seaweed. Plankton feeder (Ref. 12114, 12115).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 18 July 2017 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Reported from western (Yun-gan) (Ref. 43515) and northern Taiwan (Ref. 48451) (Kuei-ho harbor, Wan-li (Ref. 43539) and rarely found in Yehliu (Ref. 43538)), and from the Penghu Islands (Ref. 55073). Also Ref. 43515.
