Family:  Leiognathidae (Slimys, slipmouths, or ponyfishes), subfamily: Gazzinae
Max. size:  14 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine; depth range 10 - 40 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Madagascar, Reunion, India, Sri Lanka, through Indonesia and the Philippines.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Found in coral sand bottoms of coastal waters, but also enters estuaries (Ref. 47581). Feeds on small crustaceans, polychaetes, bivalves, foraminiferans, gastropods and nematodes (Ref. 47581). Forms schools (Ref. 47581). Sold dried salted in markets, and also used for fishmeal (Ref. 3424).

Country info:  Known from the Gulf of Mannar off Mandapam and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu (Ref. 45255). Also found in Chilka Lake (Ref. 29108). Also Ref. 4589, 33390.
