Family:  Scorpididae (Halfmoons)
Max. size:  20 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic-neritic; marine; depth range - 0 m
Distribution:  Southwest Pacific.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs inshore over reef areas (Ref. 7300). Swim either singly or in small schools, moving very rapidly and erratically, stopping occasionally to gulp down a few large planktonic crustaceans (Ref. 30464).

Country info:  Known from mainland New Zealand, Bay of Islands (Cape Brett - Oke Bay), Poor Knights Island (Hope Pt., Nursery Cove and Northern Arch), Mohokinau Island (Lighthouse Cove) (Ref. 35942), the Kermadec Is. (Ref. 8879) and Norfolk Island (Ref. 45524). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ.
