Etymology of generic noun from ETYFish |
Etymology not explained, presumably odontos (Gr.), tooth, and aspis (Gr.), shield, perhaps referring to how teeth comprise a prominent narrow cusp provided with two or more small “side teeth” (translation), i.e., cusplets, which, with some imagination, could be said to “shield” the main cusp; another explanation: aspis (L.), viper, perhaps referring to outwardly pointing teeth of O. ferox, like that of a viper. (See ETYFish) |
Etymology of specific epithet from ETYFish |
-atus (L.), provided with: tricuspid teeth, referring to how “awl-shaped” teeth have a “small basal cusp” (or cusplet) on both sides of smooth main cusp [perhaps a junior synonym of C. taurus]. (See ETYFish) |

Note: ETYFish and FishBase started a collaboration to complete the etymology for all valid names of fishes. For the current update, the following groups were completed: hagfishes (Myxini), lampreys (Petromyzonti), chimaeras (Holocephali), and sharks (Squalomorphi). It is a work in progress, so the two websites may not be synchronized.
