Named for Alan Owston (1853‒1915), an amateur naturalist, yachtsman and collector of Asian wildlife, notably fishes from Japan and China.
  Etymology of specific epithet  
Name from combination of Greek 'gramme' for line or row and 'odon' for tooth, presumably for the mostly single rows of teeth in the jaws.
