H. proximum larvae have one or two ventral tail melanophores near the anus (about 2-3 myomeres after the anus), whereas H. hygomii larvae have only one stellate melanophore 6-8 myomeres posterior to the anus; no pigment on pectoral fin rays in H. proximum, whereas melanophores scaterred on pectoral rays in H. hygomii; a small melanophore at base of caudal fin in some flexion larvae of H. proximum, this pigmentation never present in H. hygomii larvae. |
