Etymology: Schistura: Greek, schizein = to divide + Greek, oura = tail; an allusion to forked caudal fins (Ref. 45335); thavonei: Named after Mr. Thavone Phommavong, in appreciation for his help and companionship during several, and sometimes difficult fish surveys in Laos. A noun in genitive.

Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Found in stretches of streams with riffles (in the sheltered parts with somewhat quieter current), over gravel to stone bottom. The stomach contents of a 4.24 cm SL fish consist of insect larvae (Ref. 117218).
