Etymology: Gobioides: Latin, gobius = gudgeon + suffix oides = similar to (Ref. 45335).

Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range Ecology

Marine; brackish; demersal. Tropical

Distribution Countries | FAO areas | Ecosystems | Occurrences | Point map | Introductions | Faunafri

Eastern Atlantic: collected from Accra (Ghana) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 57403, 79590), but also reported from the islands of the Gulf of Guinea (Ref. 5299, 57403, 79590). Reports from northwards up to Senegal (Ref. 4343) and from Cameroon (Ref. 51193)are questionable and need confirmation.

Size / Weight / Age

Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 13.5 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 79590)

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 6 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 14; Vertebrae: 26. Diagnosis: single, complete row of caniniform teeth in both jaws; dorsal and anal fins each with 14 segmented rays; 26 vertebrae (Ref. 57403, 79590). Mouth oblique, gape wide (Ref. 27974). Gape of mouth reaching to below eye (Ref. 57403, 79590). Eyes small, approximately twice the diameter of posterior nostril (Ref. 27974). Dorsal fin: VII,14; anal fin: I,14; pectoral fins: 15-19; caudal fin: 17 segmented rays (Ref. 57403, 79590). Dorsal and anal fins apparently not connected to caudal fin (Ref. 27974, 57403, 79590), although the reliability of this feature has been questioned by various authors (Murdy, 1998)(Ref. 57403, 79590). Coloration: preserved specimens: uniformly light brown (Ref. 57403, 79590). In life: body and fins whitish; (second) dorsal- and anal-fin rays dark-tipped (Ref. 27974, 57403, 79590).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Occurs in muddy inshore marine habitats (Ref. 79590, 92840), over sandy bottom and in estuaries (Ref. 92840). Perhaps also found in brackish waters (Ref. 79590).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5312   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00977 (0.00442 - 0.02163), b=3.05 (2.86 - 3.24), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.5   ±0.5 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
