Geography and Climate Mayotte is located in Southern Africa, island in the Mozambique Channel, about one-half of the way from northern Madagascar to northern Mozambique. Area comparative is slightly more than twice the size of Washington, DC. Climate is tropical; marine; hot, humid, rainy season during northeastern monsoon (November to May); dry season is cooler (May to November). Terrain consists of generally undulating, with deep ravines and ancient volcanic peaks. Elevation extreme has the lowest point in Indian Ocean 0 m and highest point in Benara 660 m. Natural hazards are cyclones during rainy season. Geography—note: part of Comoro Archipelago
