Comments: Type locality of the holotype of Barbus brevicephalus: 'Yigashu (locality 10), Lake Tana, Ethiopia' (Ref. 35835). Known from Lake Tana and its tributaries (Ref. 31686, 35835, 96382, 128753), part of Abay drainage (Ref. 58460).

Head width more than 1.8 times in head length; head length less than 1.3 times in body depth; body depth more than 3.6 times in standard length; eye diameter less than 1.6 times in interorbital width; light yellowish green.

Occurs over muddy, sandy and rocky substrates all over the lake, preferably in water of less than 6 m depth. Juveniles feed on zooplankton and insects; adults take in addition small mollusks and macrophytes (Ref. 35835).
