Common names: Buzaq, Buzaqq
Occurrence: native
Salinity: brackish

Regulations: | Ref:
Uses: no uses
Comments: Recorded in Marsa, Salina, Simar, and Ghadira during the March-August 2002 survey where the populations were observed to be large and thriving. It was not found in Kalafrana, St. Georges Bay, Marsaxlokk, Marsascala and Il-Qawra (Gozo) where it has been previously reported (Ref. 95709). Has been extirpated from a number of locations due to various anthropogenic pressures. Populations in the wetlands of Simar and Ghadira were again monitored during the May-October 2008 survey. Exposure to extreme abiotic conditions such as rapid increase in salinity, decrease in oxygen concentration, sharp increase in water temperatue and decrease in water depth poses threat to these populations during the peak of summer months. The following management measures were recommended to effectively conserve the two wetland populations: increase protective measures during the reproductive and recruitment periods through late March to May; start re-introduction programme at sites previously known to support Aphanius species with strict monitoring of the haplotypes of introduced individuals; and introduce water monitoring programme (Ref. 95698). Also Ref. 59043.

Short description Morfologi | Morfometri

Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 9. Can be diagnosed from other species of Aphanius, Valenciidae and Fundulidae in Europe by having the following characters: males have pale yellow to yellow-orange caudal fin, in some populations with a wide dark submarginal bar, 8-15 dark blue to grey bars on a silvery background, bars usually regularly shaped and set; females possess 11-17 short dark brown bars on sides, over a faint greyish midlateral stripe, 24-29 scales in midlateral series on body, and pectoral fin with 14-15 rays (Ref. 59043).

Biologi     Ordlista (t.ex. epibenthic)

Occurs in coastal lagoons and in hypersaline to shallow still to slow-flowing fresh water, especially at river mouths (Ref. 59043). A short-lived species which inhabits ponds, ditches and swamps. Feeds on invertebrates and plants. Spawns from April to September (Ref. 26100). Spawning takes place on the bottom and in submerged vegetation (Ref. 59043). Threatened due to habitat destruction and the introduction of other species (Ref. 26100). Not a seasonal killifish. Is difficult to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139).
