Uses: gamefish: yes;
Comments: Common throughout New Zealand, but most abundant in the cooler waters south of East Cape and around the South Island (Ref. 9258), and south to Snares Island (Ref. 115198). Recorded from Northeastern and Eastern Chatham Rise as rarely found (Ref. 87166). Landed throughout the year with catches increasing from February to June (Ref. 9258). Recorded in trawl surveys in Chatham Islands (Ref. 45493) and off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. See Ref. 9072 for use in game fishing. Also Ref. 5873, 8879, 45524, 75154.

Ραχιαίες άκανθες (συνολικά) : 17 - 18; Μαλακές ραχιαίες ακτίνες (συνολικά) : 25 - 28; Εδρικές άκανθες: 3; Μαλακές εδρικές ακτίνες: 14 - 15; Σπόνδυλοι: 35. Adults have elongate upper pectoral-fin rays and are silvery with a broad black band from the nape to the pectoral-fin base (Ref. 33616).

Adults demersal on the continental shelf and upper slope (Ref. 9563) to depths of 450 m (Ref. 33616). Juveniles tend to live near shallow reefs (Ref. 6390). Postlarvae inhabit offshore waters and are found in surface waters at night (Ref. 9072). Average weight is 1800 g. Feed on polychaete worms, crustaceans, mollusks and echinoderms (Ref. 28626). Flesh is quite good eating. Often sold as tiki fillets.
