Etymology: Squatina: Latin for skate, which angel sharks superficially resemble, presumably tautonymous with Squalus squatina Linnaeus 1758 (no species mentioned). (See ETYFish); armata: Latin for armed with a weapon, referring to heavy thorns on snout and between eyes, large hooked thorns on back, and enlarged thorns on leading edge of pectoral fins. (See ETYFish).

Issue
This species is questionably a synonym of Squatina californica Ayres, 1859 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Jul. 2010: Ref. 84883) following various authors. Please send references, or more studies are needed.
