Comments: Previously recorded mainly from the highveld of the Usutu system (Ref. 13406). Current investigation shows that it is also found in the Mnkondo river on the edge of the higveld and in the Malolotja river within the reserve (Pers. comm Klaasen 1997). Also Ref. 116304.

Found in rocky riffles and rapids (Ref. 52193). It feeds on insects such as mayfly nymphs and blackfly larvae grazed from rocks (Ref. 52193). Its spines protect it from predators such as trout (Ref. 52193). Breeds during the summer (Ref. 7248, 52193). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Is an occasional aquarium species (Ref. 7248).
