Ranges from La Plata River to Mar del Plata (Ref. 27363). Range extends to the coastal rocky reefs of southern San Matias Gulf, San José Gulf and Nuevo Gulf, Chubut, to 43°S, at least 200 km south of previously reported range. Recorded from capture during spear-fishing tournaments, visual census and sightings, fish collections , and trawl surveys (Ref. 55743). Produces almost half of the world's supply (Ref. 9987).
