Found in Tyrrhenian basin from Magra to Garigliano drainages. Introduced in Lake Scanno (Pescara drainage), the only locality where it is known to survive. Abundant in Lake Scanno and apparently stable. Also survived some time in Lake Massaciuccoli (Serchio drainage [north of Pisa]) but the present status of this population is still unknown (Ref. 59043). Recorded from Lakes Nemi, Ronciglione, Bracciano, Fogliano and others (Ref. 13696). Disappeared in areas invaded by introduced S. cf. erythrophthalmus (native to northern Italy). This species still survives but at a single locality where it is still threatened by proposed new introductions (Ref. 55977). Threatened due to proposed stocking of Scardinius hesperidicus and other cyprinids (Ref. 59043). Also Ref. 94493.

Status of threat: Critically endangered (Ref. 119201).
