Known throughout India, estuaries of West Bengal, Chilka Lake (Orissa), Kerala, backwaters of Chennai and Cochin (Ref. 45255). Very common in the fishery catches in the Gangetic estuary, Chilka lake in Orissa and Kerala backwaters (Ref. 4833). Found in Godavari estuary (Ref. 51036). Also found in Maharashtra (Ref. 43634). Commonly used as food by the locals in Tirunelveli district (Ref. 44151).. Recorded as having been or being farmed in rice fields (Ref. 119549). Also Ref. 29108, 41236, 43630.

Status of threat: Low risk in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
