Found only in several streams in the Central Catchment Nature Reserves. Occurrence in the country was first recorded in 1990. Occurs in shaded forest streams with sluggish, acidic water and submerged roots/leaf litter substrates. Appears to be mainly nocturnal and feeds on small animals. Large individuals can be used as food. Threatened due to habitat degration. Conservation measures include continued protection of its natural habitat from human impacts, and strict policing against illegal fishing (Ref. 85309).

Status of threat: critically endangered (Ref. 85350).
