Definition of Term

Island biogeography
(English) The study of the relationship between island area and species number. This idea has also been Applied to isolated areas of habitat in continental areas which are effectively islands for many species. The extent to which habitat fragmentation may lead to extinction of species can be predicted from the relationship between number of species and island area. biogéographie des îles
(French) Étude du rapport entre le nombre d'espèces présentes et la surface d'une île. Ce principe a aussi été appliqué aux régions continentales isolées dans des régions qui jouent effectivement le rôle d'îles pour beaucoup d'espèces. Le rapport entre nombre d'espèce et région de l’île peut être utiliser pour la prédiction de l'ampleur de la fragmentation de l'habitat qui peut mener à l’extinction d'une espèce. (Portuguese) Estudo das relações entre uma área insular e o número de espécies. Esta ideia aplica-se igualmente a habitats continentais isolados. A extensão na qual a fragmentação do habitat pode conduzir a extinções de espécies pode ser previsto estudando as relações entre o número de espécies e a área da ilha.
