calcified cartilage
(English) Shark skeletons are formed of hyaline cartilage or gristle, but this is often reinforced with layers of calcified cartilage, cartilage impregnated with a mineral, hydroxyapatite, similar to that of bone but organized differently, in hard, tile-like pavement of tiny tesserae, or more compactly as in the calcified structures of vertebral centra.
