Established in every state except Alaska. Generally regarded as a pest in Western States because of ecological changes which reduced populations of native species. Species became the basis for 270,000 $ fishery in Upper Mississippi (Ref. 13779). Have escaped fish-breeding ponds in the South more than 20 years ago and have steadily moved up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Chicago City council has passed an ordinance that prohibits selling of live species of Asian carp to the general public (Ref. 46969). A popular fish sold in live fish markets. Found in 2 out of 6 live fish markets near the Lakes Erie and Ontario (Ref. 53249).
