Comments A small number of large fish were brought by a private enterprise to test its suitability to local conditions. The first experimental breeding farm was established in Kurdani. In 1939, commercial carp farming was established in the Beai Shean Valley. In the following year, additional carp farms grew rapidly in area and yield and in less than a decade, production reached more than 5000 tons. Carps were also stocked in Lake Kinneret and Lake Huleh (which was drained in 1957). Currently, a self-sustaining population exists in Lake Kinneret, small populations also inhabit some of the coastal plain rivers (Ref. 37616).
